Pedro Martinez thought he might have the cure for the Curse of the Bambino. Or whatever reason the Red Sox haven't won a World Series since 1918.

Standing tall, or as tall as he can, is diminutive Dominican Nelson de la Rosa -- Martinez's little friend who has been a clubhouse presence this season.

Picture of Nelson de la Rosa, Pedro Martinez' little friend and Red Sox mascot.

"The curse is gone,'' outfielder Johnny Damon declared after a September victory. "He's helping us out.''

And the bobblehead sized good luck charm even began charging fans who want to take a picture with him $5.

Although "Mahow Boy" has become an icon in Bean Town, he wasn't a welcome sight when Red Sox manager Terry Francona saw him for the first time.

"It totally freaked Terry out when he saw him sitting in the clubhouse," said a witness. "He thought he was a doll until he moved!"

Here's a (very low quality) video showing Nelson de la Rosa on a Spanish language TV show. It runs just over 5 minutes and is QUITE suggestive, so viewer discretion is advised!   :-)  [Windows Media format]

Nelson de la Rosa - a living Red Sox bobblehead - is in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the shortest living actor at 28 inches tall.

"Literally, he was up to your knees,'' pitcher Bronson Arroyo said.

"Pedro's bobblehead is so much bigger than him. It was unbelievable. I'm telling you, the pictures don't even do justice. The picture makes him look bigger.''

December 2004 Update: Pedro Martinez will sign a $53 million, four-year contract with the New York Mets.  Will Nelson de la Rosa be with him in the dugout...?  Only time will tell. :-)
