LA Dodgers give Bobbleheads at California Evacuation Center |

October, 2003 - SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. --
After being ordered to evacuate his own home, which was threatened by
the raging wildfires that have turned much of Southern California into a
disaster area, Dodgers manager Jim Tracy did not hesitate to join
third-base coach Glenn Hoffman and right fielder Shawn Green on Thursday
at the San Bernardino International Airport, which is being used as an
evacuation center.
The trio visited with more than 1,000 area residents in the hopes of raising spirits. "To watch a fire and say, 'Hey, there's a fire,' and then before you know it, watch it walk through the wash to the tract of homes you live in ... that's a pretty scary thing," said Tracy, who was fortunate not to lose his house. "That fire moves so fast." The Dodgers brought 1,000 blankets, 500 visors, 500 lunch boxes, a few hundred bobbleheads and Tommy Lasorda dolls to give away at the evacuation center during a two-hour visit. "It was an easy decision [to visit San Bernardino]," said Tracy. "Seeing the number of people there, several of whom were wandering around and cannot get back to where they live and don't even know if they will find a home or smoldering ash ... This is very important to me." Many residents of Southern California hail from other parts of the world, but in a time of crisis, neighbors have united and are working together to comfort victims, protect homes and save lives. "As we drove down -- me and my wife -- that thought occurred to us," said Tracy. "My wife did some baking and we took some pies and cookies down to Firehouse No. 62. As we saw in New York on September 11, and what we're seeing here in California is that the unsung heroes are the emergency workers, the Red Cross and the firefighters. "What they did ... I don't have enough words for them. We're watching you closely, with the utmost respect." From: www.MLB.com |
